NATIONAL SCIENCE CENTRE ATTRACTIONS
POPULAR GALLERIES
NSC is divided into a series of engaging thematic galleries, each focusing on different areas of science and technology from ancient innovations to futuristic technologies.
i) Heritage GalleryIndia is a land of ancient knowledge, wisdom and scientific temperament where yoga and ayurveda had originated. And Heritage Gallery is a celebration of India’s rich history of science and innovation. tracing contributions of ancient Indian civilizations in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine and metallurgy. Visitors can learn about the Indus Valley Civilization, ancient Indian scholars like Aryabhata and Sushruta, and their groundbreaking work in various scientific disciplines.
The gallery highlights the invention of zero, the early understanding of planetary movements, and the development of Ayurvedic medicine. It’s a reminder of India’s long-standing tradition of scientific inquiry and discovery.
ii) Prehistoric GalleryPrehistoric Life Gallery takes you back in time to explore the dawn of life on earth, from the formation of the first living organisms to the age of dinosaurs. This area has life-sized models of ancient creatures, including dinosaur replicas that fascinate visitors, especially children.
This Gallery also explains how scientists study fossils to learn about the Earth’s ancient past, and how life has evolved over millions of years. Displays highlight the major evolutionary milestones, such as the transition from aquatic to land animals, the rise of mammals, and the eventual emergence of humans.
iii) Human Biology GalleryHuman Biology Gallery takes visitors on a journey through the intricacies of human body, explaining the functions of various systems like the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Interactive models and life-sized displays enable the audience to explore how the body works and learn about the role of genetics, brain and sensory organs in human health.
A major highlight of this gallery is the Transparent Human Body Model, which illuminates different organs and explains their functions. There are also displays on the history of medicine and advancements in medical technology, from early surgeries to modern-day organ transplants and genetic engineering.
iv) Fun Science GalleryFun Science Gallery, though designed for everybody, it’s particularly very effective for school students and young science enthusiasts. This gallery turns science into a playful activity; enabling observers grasp core concepts through direct engagement. Hands-on exhibits are used to demonstrate basic scientific principles, making learning fun and accessible.
The fun-based science models include - Optical illusions - Play with mirrors, lenses and light to see how our eyes can be tricked. Physics experiments - Explore motion, force and energy through simple yet fascinating trials like balancing beams, spinning wheels, and pendulums. Magnetic displays - Discover how magnets work and interact with different materials.
v) Emerging Technologies GalleryEmerging Technologies Gallery gives visitors a glimpse of what’s to come in the world of science. It focuses on cutting-edge developments in fields such as robotics, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. Exploring how these technologies are transforming industries, healthcare, and everyday life greatly widens one’s imagination.
This section also showcases prototypes and models of emerging innovative possibilities that will shape the future - from robotic arms that mimic human movement to nanotechnology’s potential to revolutionize medicine.
vi) Information Revolution GalleryInformation Revolution Gallery showcases the development of communication technologies from ancient times to the digital age. It tracks the evolution of information sharing, from early human language and writing systems to the invention of the printing press, telegraph, telephone, and the internet.
Exhibits demonstrate how modern communication technologies—like satellites, fiber optics and mobile networks connect the world in ways that were unimaginable even a few decades ago. The gallery also explores the role of social media, cloud computing and data analytics in shaping contemporary society.
vii) Water The Elixer of LifeWater gallery focuses on the vital role that water plays in sustaining life on earth. Through interactive exhibits and informative displays, visitors can learn about the water cycle, water conservation and the importance of clean water for health and ecosystems.
One of the key attractions here is a working model of the water cycle, which demonstrates how water moves through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. The section describes modern challenges like water pollution, scarcity and the need for sustainable water management practices.
LIVE SCIENCE DEMONSTRATIONS
In addition to its galleries, NSC offers a variety of live science demonstrations on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science, enabling the audience to see science in action.
i) Physics DemonstrationsThese demonstrations explore key principles of physics, such as motion, energy, and electromagnetism, using everyday objects. Curious minds can witness experiments that explain how things move, how energy is transferred, and how electricity works in real life.
ii) Chemistry In ActionLive Chemistry demonstrations showcase chemical reactions, which often explode, enabling science enthusiasts to understand how different substances react. It’s a highly engaging show where concepts like acid-base reactions, combustion, and oxidation are presented in a thrilling way.
iii) Planetarium ShowsNSC also offers planetarium shows, giving visitors a virtual tour of the universe. These shows explain celestial phenomena such as star formation, planetary motion, black holes, and galaxies, providing a captivating journey through space. Although NSC doesn’t have a dedicated planetarium, it often collaborates with nearby institutions to offer astronomy-related programmes.
