RAMAN SCIENCE CENTRE ATTRACTIONS
FUN SCIENCE GALLERIES
Fun Science Galleries I and II are among the most popular demonstrations on scientific principles, offering hands-on exhibits that allow students to press levers, turn wheels, roll balls, pull strings and look through peepholes to understand scientific principles. These galleries transform abstract concepts into tangible experiences, making science feel like a playful adventure rather than a daunting subject. For instance, a child might roll a ball down a ramp to learn about gravity or manipulate mirrors to explore the properties of light, all while having fun.
INVENTIONS GALLERY
Inventions Gallery is another highlight, showcasing groundbreaking innovations from around the world. It provides a historical perspective on how science and technology have evolved over time, featuring displays on inventions that have shaped industries and improved human welfare. This gallery inspires visitors by demonstrating the power of human ingenuity, often leaving them in awe of how simple ideas can lead to transformative technologies.
ICT GALLERY
Information and Communication Technology Gallery delves into the digital revolution. It highlights the role of technology in modern communication with interactive exhibits on computers, telecommunications and internet. During its opening, the then-ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair made a bold statement about India’s plans to send astronauts to space by 2015, reflecting the forward-thinking ethos of the centre. This gallery also explores emerging technologies like augmented reality with immersive exhibits that demonstrate its applications in education, industry and entertainment.
ELIXIR OF LIFE - WATER
Another notable gallery is the Water - The Elixir of Life Gallery, which educates visitors about the importance of water conservation and its role in sustaining life. Through interactive displays, it covers topics like the water cycle, purification techniques and sustainable usage, encouraging visitors to think critically about environmental challenges.
3D THEATRE
The centre’s 3D Theatre offers an immersive audio-visual experience through 3D science films and space voyages. Daily shows, scheduled four times a day, bring scientific concepts to life in a way that captivates audiences of all ages. The theatre is a crowd-pleaser and the thrill of watching a space journey or a deep-sea exploration in 3D makes this a memorable attraction.
SCIENCE ON A SPHERE
Another cutting-edge feature is the Science on a Sphere Show, which uses a spherical projection system to display dynamic visualizations of scientific data. This attraction covers topics like climate change, ocean currents and planetary movements. The spherical display creates a sense of being surrounded by data, offering a unique perspective that flat screens cannot replicate. It’s an excellent tool for understanding complex global phenomena in an accessible way.
INNOVATION HUB
The Innovation Hub, inaugurated in 2017, is a space dedicated to nurturing young talent. It provides students with resources and mentorship to work on science projects, encouraging them to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. This hub aligns with the centre’s mission to cultivate a scientific temperament among the youth, offering them a platform to experiment and create.
SCIENCE PARK
Science Park is an outdoor wonderland where science meets nature. It features large-scale models and exhibits that demonstrate scientific principles in a fun and interactive way. Curious minds can engage with a giant globe, a solar fountain, musical pipes and other displays that illustrate concepts like solar energy, acoustics and geography. The park’s open space allows families to spend hours exploring diverse scientific phenomena, making it a perfect spot for relaxing while learning.
PRE-HISTORIC ANIMAL PARK
The Pre-Historic Animal Park adds an element of adventure with its light and sound show, held every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday after sunset. This attraction features life-sized models of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures, complete with dramatic lighting and sound effects that recreate their natural habitats. It’s a thrilling experience for children, who can learn about evolution and paleontology while being entertained by the lifelike displays.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Raman Science Centre is not just about exhibits. Much more than just demonstrating science exhibits, it’s a hub for educational activities that encourage active learning. The centre organizes Science Demonstration Lectures and Science Film Shows, often on request by schools to delve deeper into specific topics. These programs are designed to complement classroom learning, offering practical insights that textbooks cannot provide. Additionally, the Vacation Creative Activity program, held during school holidays, engages children in hands-on projects that foster creativity and scientific thinking.
PLANETARIUM
Raman Science Centre’s planetarium, with its 133-seat capacity, is a stellar attraction that transports visitors into the depths of space. This facility, operational since 1997, screens several shows daily, each lasting about 30 minutes. These shows, available in multiple languages use advanced projection technology to simulate the night sky, showcasing celestial phenomena like constellations, planets and meteor showers. The planetarium also hosts special sky observation programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays after sunset, where visitors can use telescopes to observe stars, planets and other astronomical events. This experience is particularly enchanting for children and astronomy enthusiasts, sparking a lifelong interest in the cosmos.
